A Better SWOT (TOWS) Analysis

SWOT / TOWS Matrix

The traditional SWOT analysis—Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats—has been a staple of strategic planning for decades. But let’s be honest: it’s often too simplistic to be useful in real-world decision-making.

The Key Problems with SWOT

  1. It’s Static – SWOT provides a snapshot but doesn’t connect the dots to drive action.
  2. It’s Subjective – Businesses often fill in their SWOT grid with opinions rather than data, leading to bias.
  3. It Lacks Strategy – SWOT tells you what’s happening, but it doesn’t tell you what to do next.

This is where the TOWS Analysis Matrix comes in. Rather than just listing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, TOWS forces you to turn them into actionable strategies. It links internal and external factors, helping businesses move from analysis to execution.

The TOWS Matrix: A Smarter Approach

TOWS takes the same four components of SWOT but reorganises them into strategic pairings:

  • SO (Strength-Opportunity Strategies) – Use strengths to capitalise on opportunities.
  • WO (Weakness-Opportunity Strategies) – Overcome weaknesses to seize opportunities.
  • ST (Strength-Threat Strategies) – Use strengths to neutralise threats.
  • WT (Weakness-Threat Strategies) – Minimise weaknesses to avoid external risks.

How to Apply TOWS Effectively

  • SO Strategies focus on leveraging existing strengths to make the most of favourable external conditions.
  • WO Strategies tackle internal weaknesses, improving areas that could unlock opportunities.
  • ST Strategies use business advantages to mitigate risks and protect against disruption.
  • WT Strategies are about risk management, minimising exposure by addressing internal weaknesses.

Unlike SWOT, which often results in a passive list of factors, TOWS forces leaders to think strategically and create real-world solutions.
